Our view on the Bell review

This week saw the release of the review by Sir David Bell into antisemitism in UK schools and colleges.

Safe to Learn welcomes the findings of Sir David Bell’s review into antisemitism in education, which makes it clear that antisemitism in UK schools must be treated as a distinct child safeguarding issue, in line with the recommendations set out by Safe to Learn in our toolkit on safeguarding and antisemitism late last year. Safe to Learn is looking forward to working with the Department for Education to support implementation of the findings across schools in all sectors.

Safe to Learn Director Jon Ricketts said:

Students sitting at classroom desks focused on writing, with a girl in the foreground facing the camera and a teacher standing in the background, facing away.

'Every child should be safe to learn and nobody working in education should be a bystander to antisemitic abuse and hate. This report is an important milestone; it is clear that much more needs to be done to tackle the root causes of antisemitism in the UK. School leaders cannot be responsible societal shifts alone and it is right that the DfE is taking a whole-department approach to supporting schools in playing their part in effectively addressing antisemitism, including a review of the teaching standards.'
